Garmisch, Germany

One weekend in February I went cross-country skiing with some work colleagues in Garmisch, about an hour and a half from Munich. We got lucky with the weather and had a wonderful day in the sunshine surrounded by the Alps. Thanks to Koichi for the pictures!

At the parking lot about to rent skis from the tiny hut behind us. Hard to believe dozens and dozens of skis, boots and poles can come out of that place!

Check out these beautifully maintained tracks! Previously I had only ever been cross-country skiing in the Gatineau hills near Ottawa where tracks form naturally when enough people take the same route. Here some fancy machine makes them deep and perfect.

And what’s better at the end of a day of skiing than cake and hot chocolate at the cafĂ© next to the trail? Going to the mountains is so civilized in Germany.
