Aug-Oct Recap, Germany

I’ve been pretty busy recently with thesis writing, ultimate, and living life in general, but before 2009 becomes 2010, here is a highlight reel from August to October. Yes, I’m still in Germany, and no, I don’t know for how much longer but I hope to be done soon. More updates hopefully to follow in the new year, but if you are still holding out to wait to visit Munich, now is the time!

One highlight of the summer was a friend’s party celebrating his last weekend of being 39. He bought 39 kegs of beer and organised a party outside of town on his brother’s acreage and invited 200 people to celebrate with him. Two hundred roasted half-chickens, 800 litres of beer, live music and a lot of cool people made for a great time.

Early afternoon surrounded by some of the kegs:

Dance floor in the barn:

Mmmmm, weißbier!

Rü, DJing his own birthday party:

I’m not sure if I let everyone know, but last year my women’s ultimate team won both the German national championships and the European championship. During the summer we got to go to a sports awards ceremony. Did you know that chess is considered a sport? And have you ever heard of “wheelchair karate”? Munich happens to have the German female champion and she’s pretty good (she kicked one guy’s butt in a demo).

Here we are, the Woodchicas:

I also had a big birthday this year, the big 3-0. I was having too much fun at my afternoon biergarten party to take many pictures, but I did capture this big cookie Dan baked for me. Note the euro coin for a feeling of the scale. Thanks Dan!

The European club championships were held in London this year in late September. I had a cold and unfortunately didn’t play as much as I had hoped, but still enjoyed taking in the best ultimate Europe has to offer including a lot of amazing women’s teams. We finished a somewhat disappointing 4th missing bronze by two points. But if anything that has only increased the team’s motivation to do better in the World Club championships in Prague next year. Go chicas!

Snazzy discs, dives, skys (i.e. jumping really high for non-ulti people) and a shot from our close semi-final against Leeds. Our team coach-player is on the left, wearing my knee brace which I happily didn’t need any more, although unfortunately she did.
